So what if it rains?

As with all camping holidays the weather can play an important part in how you enjoy yourself. Coming to a mountainous region such as the Auvergne, the likelihood of rain is probably greater than other areas of France with the possibility of the odd day of rain. The secret is to be prepared and not to rely on the weather being sunny every day.

So what can I do? Bring a light raincoat or cagoule and have an alternative plan for a dull or rainy day. The camping is ideally suited for walking and there are a number of signed walks in the area. A booklet containing these routes can be obtained from the tourist office in Neuveglise for a very small fee.

Jump in the car and go on a trip around the local area perhaps. From Neuveglise you could go to the Chateau d'Alluze, Le Garabit to visit M Eiffel's famous viaduct near to the Garabit lakes which form part of the Grandval HEP scheme to generate electricity from a series of lakes. The spa town of Chaudes Aigues where there is a museum as well as the possibility to 'take the waters'.

Further afield you might consider some of the more advanced walks Le Prat du Bouc or Le Puy Griou or Le Puy Marie to name but a few. Remember that walking in the mountains, even this far south, should be treated with respect and you may wish to refer to the weather section for other hints on safe mountain walking.

The viaduct at Millau offers another possible distraction as there is a visitor centre with films and information on the construction of this masterpiece of engineering. Simply follow the A75 south from St Flour.

St Flour deserves a visit see the shopping section for more information.

The whole surrounding area offers so much to see if you are prepared to travel a little further, so don't be put off by a couple of days rain as there's plenty to do when the weather is poor. Please visit the Office de Tourisme in Neuveglise or reception in the camping for more information.
